Hitting Fundamentals - Level 2 Hitting
Level 2 Hitting - Feet and Hips

To begin making the kinetic chain more efficient, it is important to start with a balanced stance and a short balanced stride.

As you complete the stride, the front knee hip and shoulder should remain loaded with the front leg relatively straight.

The pivot of the back foot to start the chain should be focused on for the beginning of hip rotation.

As the back foot pivots and the hip rotates, the driving force should come primarily from the back leg, with a visualized axis of rotation. As the hips pivot, the front leg should remain relatively straight, allowing for transfer of energy through the POC (point of contact).

Level 2 Hitting - Shoulders and Hands

As you make the upper portion of the kinetic chain more efficient, it is important to consider two aspects: swing arc and length of hand movement from swing initiation to POC.

A relatively level swing can increase the area in the hitting where you can contact the ball for a desired line drive. Focusing on level shoulders driving forward on the hip pivot can assist with keeping the swing arc relatively level though the hitting zone.

Alternating hands to focus on the shortest distance from initiation to POC and completing the chain from feet, hips, shoulders to hands can assist with making the swing more efficient. A shorter swing time can give you more pitch recognition and reaction time.

Level 2 Hitting - Efficient (Kinetic)Chain

Since the swing is a chain of movements (kinetic chain), it is important to be aware of the various joint movements when you are practicing your mechanics.

The objective in taking repetitions on a tee or Swingaway device with the ball placed in the middle of the plate is to focus on the fluid coordination of either one joint movement at a time, several joint movements, or the fulll chain. As you are performing repeitions, you can focus on each segment individually, then as a complete chain to become more aware of your swing pattern.

As you become more aware of your kinetic chain, it may be possible to diagnose any problems and make corrections as you advance.
