Hitting Fundamentals - Level 3 Hitting
Level 3 Hitting - Opposite Field Hitting

There are three primary purposes for hitting to the opposite field. The first purpose is simply hitting an outside fastball. Practice keeping your front shoulder closed slightly longer and hitting the ball deeper in the zone.

The second purpose for hitting to the opposite field is a situational approach where you are looking to hit "oppo" regardless of pitch location. In this situation, you will need to visualize the ball as vertically split into two segments and hit the inner half of the ball.

The third purpose is reacting to an off-speed pitch. Your mechanics will be the same as hitting a fastball, but concentrate on driving through the ball off of your back leg deep in the zone.

Level 3 Hitting - 2 Strike Approach

There are three main possibilites to take when you have two strikes.

If you are a read-react hitter who doesn't focus on looking for a specific pitch, you could keep you placement in the batter's box the same and simply react to the pitch.

If you are a much better fastball hitter, you could move up in the box and closer to the plate, challenging the pitcher to throw an inside fastball.

If you are not a strong fastball hitter, but can hit the breaking ball well, you could move to the back of the batter's box to give yourself a slight increase in time to recognize and react to the pitch.

Level 3 Hitting - Off-Speed Reaction

We have looked at hitting to the opposite field with off-speed pitches; most of the time pitchers will work off-speed pitches to the outer part of the zone, so the opposite field approach will apply.

It is important to get repetitions, however, with reacting to off-speed pitches throughout the zone. Tee and Swingaway work can focus on keeping the barrel behind your hands until POC(since pitchers want you to "roll over" on an off-speed pitch and hit it into the ground) and practice hitting the ball in all zone locations. In advanced batting practice drills, work in some off-speed pitches in a situational 2-stike approach. Advanced players should be able to throw strikes and at least a mediocre changeup for BP. (see pitch grips if needed)
